Path among trees in an urban park
Local guide

Parque Kabah and Las Palapas

Cancún is more than its beaches. A few blocks from the buzz of Avenida Tulum, downtown keeps two places that locals use every single day and most visitors never hear about: Parque Kabah, an urban nature reserve where you can run beneath the trees alongside coatis and deer, and Parque de las Palapas, the plaza where the whole city comes out for street food each evening. Here is how to enjoy both like a local, with Avenida Nader as your starting point.

Parque Kabah: living jungle in the middle of the city

Parque Kabah is one of those urban rarities that make you smile: more than forty hectares of low tropical forest set aside when the city was laid out in the 1970s, still standing today amid avenues and residential blocks. The moment you pass the gate, traffic noise fades and is replaced by the calls of chachalacas, the crunch of dry leaves and the cool air released by the canopy. It is, quite literally, the lung of downtown.

Beyond the trails, the park houses a small site museum devoted to the history of Cancún: photographs of the first settlers, scale models and objects from the days when there was nothing here but a fishing village and a blueprint. It is worth stepping inside to understand how such a young city came to be. Check current opening days and hours before you go, as the museum does not always follow the park's schedule.

Running or walking early: the best time of day

The main loop is a wide dirt-and-gravel track, almost always in the shade, that circles the park's perimeter in a little over a kilometer; narrower paths branch into the forest if you want to stretch your route. Downtown runners use it first thing in the morning, when the temperature is still mild and the wildlife is most active. After nine o'clock the humid heat sets in, so if you are coming from a temperate climate, get up early: the reward is having the trail almost entirely to yourself.

Late afternoon is the other good window, though it is best to leave before dark. At midday, stay by the pool. Here is what we suggest packing in your bag:

Wildlife etiquette: coatis, deer and company

What makes Kabah special is that the animals roam free and you will meet them. Coatis, which locals call tejones, move in bands with their tails held straight up like antennas and are curious to the point of cheekiness; white-tailed deer prefer the clearings at dawn; agoutis dart across the path at full speed; and iguanas sunbathe on any available rock. With a little luck you will also spot toucans, woodpeckers and blue morpho butterflies.

The golden rule is never to feed them. The coatis have learned that backpacks hold tasty things and may come very close: give them nothing, keep food sealed and never leave your bag on the ground. Watch from a distance, quietly, without flash and without chasing them for a photo. If you are traveling with children, explain beforehand that these are wild animals, not pets; that conversation is part of the outing.

Parque de las Palapas: the plaza where Cancún has dinner

If Kabah belongs to the morning, Las Palapas belongs to the night. This plaza in the heart of downtown, just off Avenida Tulum, takes its name from the palm-thatched roofs of the food stalls around it. As the sun goes down it fills with families, couples and groups of friends who all come for the same thing: to eat antojitos standing up or on a bench while the kids circle the square in little electric cars.

What is on the menu? Marquesitas, the crisp rolled crêpe filled with Edam cheese that is the peninsula's signature dessert; grilled corn and esquites with mayonnaise, cheese and chili; freshly made churros; Yucatecan salbutes and panuchos; tamales, tacos and aguas frescas made with fresh fruit. You order at the stall, pay in cash and eat in the open air. It is simple, affordable, deeply local cooking, and once you get a taste for neighborhood life you will not want to go back to the Hotel Zone for dinner.

The plaza also doubles as a stage: on weekends there are danzón evenings, concerts, craft fairs and, in late October, the Day of the Dead altars. Around it sit the Parque de los Artesanos, with handicraft and clothing stalls, and the Jardín del Arte, with open-air exhibitions. How to get there on foot from Avenida Nader

This is where staying downtown changes the whole plan. From Avenida Nader, Parque de las Palapas is about a five-minute walk: cross Avenida Tulum at the pedestrian crossing and you are on the plaza. You can go in your dinner clothes, carrying almost nothing, and walk back along lit, busy streets. It is, in fact, the evening routine of many locals.

Parque Kabah is farther out, on Avenida Kabah, toward the southwest of downtown. On foot it is roughly thirty to forty minutes along wide avenues; by taxi it is a short ride, and city buses also run along Avenida Kabah and drop you near the entrance. Our advice: take a taxi at dawn, run or walk the loop, and decide afterward whether to stroll back at your own pace. At the front desk we will point you to the best route for that day.

A perfect day downtown

Here is the day we suggest when guests ask: get up early and run in Kabah while the park wakes up; come back to the hotel for breakfast at MERO 18 with your hair still damp; spend midday in the shade of the urban jungle at the cenote-style pool; head out mid-afternoon to follow the food route along Avenida Nader; and finish at Las Palapas with a marquesita in hand. No transfers, no queues, no reservations: just walking.

If this is your way of traveling, with parks, markets and neighborhood life at your doorstep, we look forward to welcoming you on Avenida Nader. Book directly on our website and you will always get the best available rate, plus a front desk that knows downtown by heart and will help you make the most of it.
