This means you don't need to stay right on the seafront to enjoy the Caribbean: you simply need to know the right access points and arrive with a local's attitude.

Playa Delfines and its lookout: the Cancún postcard
If you only had time for one, make it Playa Delfines. Located near the far end of Boulevard Kukulcán, it's the most famous and spacious public beach in the Hotel Zone: wide open, with no hotels blocking the view and home to the iconic monumental "Cancún" sign where everyone takes their photo. Its lookout offers one of the most beautiful panoramas of the Mexican Caribbean, with the turquoise gradient stretching all the way to the horizon. It has free parking and palapas, though the surf tends to be stronger than at other beaches, so it's wise to respect the flags.
Tortugas, Las Perlas, Chac Mool and Marlín
Playa Tortugas and Playa Las Perlas, in the first kilometers of the boulevard, are ideal for families: calmer, shallow waters full of life, with services nearby. Further along, Playa Chac Mool and Playa Marlín offer that postcard Caribbean—brilliant white sand and crystal-clear water—with well-marked public access points. All of them are free; the only thing you pay for, if you wish, are the sun loungers or a tab at a beach club. Arrive early to claim shade and a good spot.

Two details make the difference between a great day and a frustrating one: the surf and the sargassum. The beaches have a flag system—green for safe conditions, yellow for caution and red for stay out of the water—that's always worth checking before you swim. Sargassum, that brown seaweed that sometimes reaches the Caribbean, appears seasonally and varies from day to day; if it concerns you, check recent reports and choose more sheltered beaches, or head out in the morning, when the water tends to be cleaner.
